2015 Christmas Raffle
for Tierschutzverein Eichstaett

Nah und Fern

For the sixth year in a row, Shoshanna Ahart has donated two original pastel paintings to Tierschutzverein Eichstaett , a local non-profit animal rescue group, for their Christmas raffle. Both landscape paintings depict scenes from the Eichstaett area. The first prize painting depicts a summer day in the Bastions garden and the second prize painting is an autumn scene near the village of Wintershof. The paintings are on display at Kaffee-Roesterei Saerve (Marktgasse 9, Eichstaett). Frau Saerve, a long standing member of Tierschutzverein Eichstaett, was more than happy to exhibit the paintings in her storefront window. All of the money raised through the raffle goes directly to Tierschutzverein Eichstaett to support their Cat Shelter and to provide food and veterinary care for all of the animals the organization supports—cats, dogs, rabbits and other small animals, birds.

Last year the raffle raised 2090,-- € and Ahart is hoping to surpass that amount this year.
Raffle tickets are € 10 each and can be purchased at the following Eichstaett businesses: Kaffee-Rösterei Saerve, Buchhandlung Cebulla (Ostenstr. 2), Lotus Blumenhaus (Kardinal-Preysing-Platz 6), Getränke Gabler (Westenstr. 141 oder Industriestr. 42). Raffle tickets can also be purchased directly from Tierschutzverein Eichstaett 08421-7504 or 99757, or directly from Ahart Atelier, 08421-935484. The drawing will take place on December 25, and two winners will be chosen, one for each painting.

An Earthly Paradise

October 23, 2013 – January 12, 2014
Jura-Museum, Willibaldsburg
Burg Street 19
85072 Eichstaett, Germany

Shoshanna Ahart, presents her view of Hortus Eystettensis in a spectacular series of pastel paintings, which celebrate the contemporary garden, and show that Hortus Eystettensis is still an earthly paradise. The paintings in this exhibition were all painted on location in the Bastion garden.

The Bastion garden of Willibald castle was laid out in 1998 on the basis of the “Hortus Eystettensis”, a collection of copperplate engravings published in 1613 by the garden’s designer, Basilius Besler. Besler designed the original botanical garden, Hortus Eystettensis, in 1592 for Eichstaetter Prince-Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen. The garden was destroyed in 1633 by the Swedes during the seven years war. The Bavarian Palace Department painstakingly re-created the garden, and the flowers are planted according to their blooming seasons as described in Besler’s book.

In her exhibition, Coming Home, Shoshanna Ahart presents work created during the summer of 2011 while, an artist-in-residence at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) in the United States, as well as, new work created in and around her adopted home of Eichstaett, Germany. While working at VCCA, Shoshanna explored various aspects of the landscape, including the themes of water, sky, plant life and nature’s relationship to the rural architecture of Virginia. Although the Virginia landscape and architecture are different from the Altmuehltal, she began to see a connection between her American and her German works and the idea of exhibiting the two groups together quickly developed.

Shoshanna Ahart was awarded her first artist residency to VCCA in 1992. Through the VCCA international artist exchange program, she was awarded an artist residency to the Oberpfaelzer Kuenstlerhaus in 1995 and again in 1998. “I owe my entire ‘German experience’…really my life here in Germany to the VCCA…without the opportunities they gave me I never would have visited Bavaria.” In 2011, she was one of two German artists awarded an artist residency by the Oberpfaelzer Kuenstlerhaus to Virginia. “I was so happy to be back at VCCA after almost 20 years,” said Shoshanna, “…but by the end of my stay I was really homesick for the Altmühltal.”

Both of the environments – VCCA and Eichstaett – are very special to Shoshanna Ahart. “In English we have a saying, ‘Home is where the heart is.’ Where is my home, where is my heart? It lies on two continents. How is this possible? I am deeply connected to both the United States and Germany.

“Places are like people, they have unique personalities. People get to know each other through conversations and interactions. I get to know places through the act of painting. Through repeated painterly observation, the characters of places are revealed to me.”

Coming Home is a love-letter of sorts to these two places. “The places are different and yet, similar…and both are so much …of who I am…they have inspired my work…and my work is…after all…me.”
